The Sydney University Wind Orchestra is pleased to announce Splash Percussion!

Splash is the title for a brand new music performance group at USYD. Also known as the Sydney University Percussion Ensemble, Splash is the first and only percussion ensemble at the main university campus. Led under the artistic direction of James Guest, the orchestra’s percussion section leader and long time SUWO veteran, Splash consists of members from the orchestra’s current percussion section.

Since 2011 the orchestra’s percussion section has been expanding and increasing in strength, supporting the orchestra with more challenging and percussion intensive works. Earlier this year, the percussion section helped the orchestra bring to life Eric Whitacre’s ‘Ghost Train’, an epic 20 minute work that put percussionists in the spotlight as the driving force, literally, of the piece. Seeing how well the section performed as an ensemble as well as the passion, commitment and friendship displayed by percussionists in and outside the band room, the formation of Splash was inevitable.

Splash will be making their public debut at SUWO’s Showcase concert on the 16th of August where they will perform a small taste from their premiere concert.

The premise of Splash is to feature the percussion section beyond their more traditionally supportive role, as well as to engage the players and help them develop ensemble skills and musicality that would not come naturally from participating in an orchestra or band. Splash will demonstrate its youthful and modern nature by performing fun and engaging pieces as well as challenging contemporary works by prominent percussion ensemble composers. All of the orchestra’s percussionists are invited and encouraged to participate in Splash.

Splash has already come together once to perform at the orchestra’s annual band camp where they took out first place in the talent quest. Splash will be making their public debut at SUWO’s Showcase concert on the 16th of August where they will perform a small taste from their premiere concert, which will take place later in semester. In addition, Splash will be performing the world premiere of ‘Levity’, an ensemble piece composed by SUWO’s very own Daniel Dinh.
